The Hughes Library is the main branch of the Eastern Monroe Public Library, serving as a vibrant hub of knowledge, history, and community in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Located at 1002 North Ninth Street (at the corner of Route 611 and Chipperfield Drive), it became the library’s modern home in 1996 after a major renovation made possible through the generosity of R. Dale Hughes and his family.

Library History

Before the Hughes Library opened, the library operated out of a Victorian home at 913 Main Street, and earlier still, out of the Stroud Mansion and other temporary sites.

Today Hughes Library offers a wide range of services:

  • A large collection of physical and digital materials (books, DVDs, audiobooks, magazines, etc.)
  • A designated Local History & Genealogy Room housing newspapers, census and church records, family histories, cemetery indexes, and more, reflecting the rich heritage of Monroe County.
  • Free public meeting spaces including a 100-person community room and smaller conference/board rooms for local nonprofit and community use.
  • Regular programs spanning all ages — children, teens, and adults — that foster literacy, lifelong learning, and community connection.

With its combination of modern functionality, local historical resources, and community outreach, the Hughes Library embodies both past and future — preserving heritage while helping meet contemporary needs.
