Celebrating Memorial Day

Memorial Day, previously called Decoration Day, is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of each May to honor and mourn our military personnel who have died during their service in the United States Armed Forces, from the Revolutionary War through today’s conflicts. From 1868 to 1970, May 30th was the designated date. Visiting memorials and cemeteries, especially national ones, occurs across the nation. The holiday’s origins are contested, but what is known is that the Civil War was the catalyst that began annual traditions. The Memorial Day extended weekend is also considered the unofficial start of summer. Your library’s staff have curated a list of 10 library items to help facilitate this day’s solemnity and honorific recognition toward those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
