Celebrating Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is annually observed on the second day of the second month of the year, February 2nd. It’s not a public holiday, but it is an unofficial observance. The tradition is said to go back a thousand years in Germany and brought to the US by the Pennsylvania Dutch. That tradition involves the “noble” groundhog coming out of its burrow and predicting that either there will be six more weeks of winter if it sees its shadow, or there will be an early Spring if it doesn’t. The most famous groundhog prognosticator can be found right here in our state in the western PA town of Punxsutawney! Punxsy Phil has been at his job since 1887!
