Weekly Programs

  • Chair Yoga (Mondays) Every Monday, 2:00pm (unless otherwise specified) — Community Room (May: No class Monday, May 12th and Monday, May 26th)
    Join our chair yoga sessions, open to all skill levels. Please dress comfortably, bring water, and feel free to bring your own yoga mat. Space is limited to 50 participants, available on a first-come, first-served basis. 
  • Color Yourself Calm (Wednesdays) Every Wednesday, 12:30pm-3:00pm (drop-in) — Pullen Room.
  • Drop in for a self-guided coloring session where all ages and abilities are welcome. With provided materials and soothing music, you can relax, socialize, or enjoy some quiet time at your own pace. 
  • Tech Thursdays (Thursdays)
    • How to Use Google Maps for Navigation and Location Services — Thursday, 05/01/2025, 2pm — Explore the features of Google Maps, including how to get directions, search for locations, and use real-time traffic updates. Comfort with computer basics or smartphone/tablet required. Registration is required – space is limited. Call 570-421-0800 ext. 317 or stop by the Hughes Library’s Information Desk to register.
    • Powerpoint for Beginners — Thursday, 05/08/2025, 2pm — Learn the basics of creating presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, including adding text, images, and slides.     • Introduction to the Library Catalog & Overview of Library Services — Thursday, 05/15/2025, 2pm — This class will teach you how to search for books, audiobooks, and other resources using the library catalog.     • Google Docs for Beginners — Thursday, 05/22/2025, 2pm — Learn how to create, edit, and share documents using Google Docs, a free and accessible online word processor. Comfort with computer basics or smartphone/tablet required. Registration is required – space is limited. Call 570-421-0800 ext. 317 or stop by the Hughes Library’s Information Desk to register.
    • Intro to Computers & the Internet — Thursday, 05/29/2025, 2pm — This class introduces basic computer and internet skills, including navigating web browsers, searching online, and understanding basic digital tools. Words & Film: “Yellow Rose”
Sunday, May 4th, 2pm – Community Room
Join us to watch Yellow Rose in honor of Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month. A Filipina teen in Texas chases her dream of country music while facing a major decision. Starring Eva Noblezada and Lea Salonga, directed by Diane Paragas. Rated PG-13 for swearing/strong language and teen drinking.

Monday Sit & Stitch

Meet fellow crafters, chat, share tips, and enjoy a relaxed, creative vibe. This is a social hangout, not a class. All crafts are welcome, but be sure to bring your own supplies. Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Learning Session
Monday, May 5th, 1pm – 3pm – Board Room
Our last session! This class provides a fun and social environment to learn the basics of poker. Registration is highly recommended; walk-ins are allowed only if space permits. As the saying goes, “Minute to learn, lifetime to master”—and that’s exactly what you’ll experience with poker! Please note, no gambling or exchange of funds is permitted—this is purely a learning and social environment. For adults only, 18+.

Guided Meditation with Luz
Tuesday, May 6th, 2pm-3pm – Community Room
Join Luz for a grounding mindfulness session focused on the element of Wood—aligned with spring and the energy of new growth. Bring a mat or use a chair, and consider bringing a pillow or bolster, or a towel or blanket to roll – plus water for hydration! HUB Book Club
Tuesday, May 6th, 6:00pm — Pullen Room/ Zoom
This month’s selection of the Hughes United Book Club (HUB) is Banyan Moon by Thao Thai. An e-book copy of this title is available on Hoopla and print copies available to be placed on hold in our catalog. Retirement Workshop

Health Booth: Lyme & Tick Borne Illnesses
Friday, May 9th, 1pm-4pm (drop-in) – Hughes Lobby
This May, stop by our free health booth hosted by a representative from the Pennsylvania Department of Health! Learn about Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses—how to prevent them, recognize the symptoms, and protect yourself and your loved ones as we head into the warmer months. You’ll also find helpful health resources and tips to support overall well-being. No appointments are necessary—just drop in, ask questions, and take a proactive step toward staying safe and healthy this season!

Intro to Birding (for Adults!)
Saturday, May 10th, 2pm – Community Room
With PEEC as our guide, discover the essentials of birding just in time for Spring. Learn how to identify species, understand bird behavior, and more. Evening Chair Zumba® with Danny Grae
Tuesday, May 13th, 5:30pm – Community Room
Discover the joy of Chair Zumba with Danny, a seated adaptation of the popular Zumba dance fitness program. Enjoy an upper body workout perfect for all fitness levels, plus it’s low impact! Free BookHouse Concert: HomeGrown String Band
Friday, May 16th, 7pm, doors open 6:30pm – Community Room
Enjoy an upbeat concert with the HomeGown String Band, featuring Rick, Georgianne, and Annalee Jackofsky. This talented family brings traditional tunes to life with guitar, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, and more—plus a bit of flatfoot dancing! All ages are welcome to join the fun. Refreshments can be purchased during the event, and donations are greatly appreciated.

Free Weekday Matinee Film: Philomena
Wednesday, May 21st, 2:00pm — Community Room
Starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan! This emotional and comedic journey is just right for the days after Mother’s Day. A world-weary journalist helps a woman search for the son she was forced to give up decades ago after living in a convent. Rated PG-13 for language, themes, and sexual references.

Worms at Work: Hands-on Vermicompost Workshop
Thursday, May 22nd, 6pm – Community Room
Turn kitchen scraps into garden gold – with worms! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the basics of composting with worms (vermicomposting) and build your own micro worm bin—about the size of a salad container—perfect for your countertop, windowsill, or basement. Red Cross Blood Drive
Saturday, May 24th, 9:30am-2:30pm — Community Room
Join us for a vital blood drive hosted by the American Red Cross at Hughes Library. Both Power Red and Whole Blood donations will be accepted. Registration is required—call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcross.org/rapidpass to schedule your appointment and help save lives.

Tick Info. Booth w/ PA Tick Research Lab
Saturday, May 24th, 10am-2pm – Hughes Lobby
Got tick questions? Learn how to identify ticks, prevent bites, and understand the diseases they can carry. Public health assistants from the Northeast Wildlife DNA Lab will be on hand with expert info. You can also find out how to submit ticks for testing—results are ready in 72 hours and can help inform treatment. No registration needed—just stop by!

Word Play Social
Tuesday, May 27th, 1:30pm- 4:00pm (drop in) — Pullen Room
Join us for a fun and social word game gathering every fourth Tuesday from 1:30pm to 4pm at Hughes Library. Whether you’re an experienced player or new to the games, drop in anytime during the event. Use one of the provided Scrabble, Bananagrams, and other word game boards, or bring your own favorite. It’s a self-guided, come-and-go event – stay for the whole time or just stop by for a bit. No registration required.

Library Board Game Night (for adults) 
Wednesday, May 28th, 4:00pm – 8:00pm — Eisemann Room
Join us for fun and games, meet new people, and bring your favorite tabletop games! (Or try ours!) Drop by anytime between 4pm and 8pm. Open to all, ages 14+. No experience required and all skill levels welcome.

Crossword Connections: Social Puzzle Hour
Friday, May 30th – 11am – Eisemann Room
Join us for a relaxed, social crossword-solving session! We’ll warm up with an easy puzzle, collaborate on a fun, themed group crossword, and wrap up with a creative clue-writing challenge. Registration helpful for staff but not required. Call 570-421-0800 ext. 317.

A PA Department of Health nurse will be here to talk to you about Ticks. It’s important to be informed as we shed our winter coats and go outside. She will also be available to answer any questions or concerns you may have. No appointment necessary.

Lyme Disease Health Booth

Thursday, May 1, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Stop by the library to pick up information on Lyme Disease and other tick
borne diseases along with ways you can protect yourself and your family. A PA Department of Health nurse will be available to answer any questions you may have.
