Soil Testing Workshop with the Master Gardeners
Thursday, April 2nd, 1pm — Community Room
Get your garden off to a healthy start! Spring is the perfect time to test your soil, ensuring your plants get the nutrients they need for a thriving season. Learn why soil testing matters, how to do it, and how to interpret the results in this workshop with Penn State Extension Master Gardeners, Monroe County. Free soil testing kits are available only for those who pre-register and attend.Participants must bring a cup of soil from their garden/yard. Limited space—registration required. Financial Wellness Fair in Partnership with UECU
Saturday, April 4th, 10am-2pm — Community Room
Take charge of your financial future at the Financial Wellness Fair. Free, drop-in event. 30-minute in-person financial education sessions throughout the day. Topics include Budgeting & Managing Credit, Identity Theft and Fraud Prevention, Auto Buying 101, and Homebuyer Education. No registration required. Light refreshments provided. This is a social meet-up, not a class, but you may find others who practice the same craft and are happy to lend an ear, offer a hand, or swap tips. All crafts are welcome—just bring your own supplies. No registration needed; drop in anytime. For adults, but ages 14+ welcome. We meet first and third Monday afternoons (3pm-4:30pm) and Second Sunday afternoons (1pm-3pm)!

Red Cross Blood Drive
Saturday, April 11th, 9:30am-2:30pm — Community Room
Your lifesaving donation is needed now! Join us at Hughes Library for an American Red Cross blood drive, accepting Whole Blood and Power Red donations. Harsh winter storms in late January have resulted in urgent need for blood. Your donation can help patients facing cancer, trauma, surgery, and chronic illnesses. Registration is strongly recommended—call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcross.org/rapidpass.

Stress Management Health Booth
Tuesday, April 14th, 9am-12pm (drop-in) – Hughes Lobby
In recognition of National Stress Awareness Month, this booth offers a space to explore everyday approaches to managing stress and building balance. A PA Department of Health representative will be available to discuss topics such as creating calming routines or noticing stress triggers. Everyone is welcome to attend. Drop in anytime—no appointment or registration needed.

Cut, Paste, & Connect: A Junk Journaling Social Craft Hour
Wednesday, April 15th, 5:30pm-7pm – Community Room
Drop in for a relaxed junk journaling and collage social. Create a junk journal–style bookmark or bring your own journal to add pages and decorations while chatting with fellow crafters. This is a self-guided gathering, not a class. Supplies will be available to share, including glue sticks, torn book pages, washi tape, colored pencils, markers, magazine cutouts, scrapbook paper pieces, and other collage odds and ends. Journals are not provided, so feel free to bring your own if you’d like to work in it. Beginners welcome. For adults, but ages 14+ welcome. Kaleidoscope Book Club
Thursday, April 16th, 6:00pm — Pullen Room/Zoom
April’s Theme: Queer Earth: Stories Rooted in Land, Water, and Survival. Celebrate Earth Day with a book that explores the connection between queer lives and the natural world. Choose a book by an LGBTQ+ author, featuring LGBTQ+ characters, or exploring LGBTQ+ themes that engages with landscapes, ecosystems, climate change, or humanity’s relationship with the planet. A choose-your-own-read adult book club on third Thursdays celebrating LGBTQ+ authors, characters, and stories with a new theme each month. Free BookHouse Concert: Bluesography with Son Lewis
Friday, April 17th, 7pm (doors open 6:30pm) — Community Room
In Bluesography, Lewis presents a solo acoustic performance tracing the development of blues from its earliest roots to modern styles. Through music, narration, and audience dialogue, he explores how the blues helped shape many forms of American popular music—including jazz, country, rock & roll, and more. Light refreshments will be available for a small charge, and donations are gratefully appreciated to help support this ongoing music series. Plan to arrive before the scheduled start time to ensure seating and enjoy the full performance.

Free Weekday Matinee Film: Dead Poets Society (1989)

In celebration of National Poetry Month, join us for Dead Poets Society (1989). Robin Williams gives one of his most beloved performances as an unconventional English teacher whose passion for poetry and life challenges his students at a conservative New England prep school to “seize the day” and think for themselves. A heartfelt story about creativity, courage, and the transformative power of literature. Feel free to bring a chair cushion or pillow for extra comfort. Rated PG (parental guidance suggested). Blackout & Collage Poetry Social Craft
Tuesday, April 21st, 5:30pm-6:30pm — Community Room
In Celebration of National Poetry Month! Turn an existing page of text into a brand new poem! Blackout poetry (also called erasure poetry) is beginner-friendly and surprisingly fun — simply black out the words you don’t need and let the hidden poem appear. We’ll provide guidance, examples, and all the supplies you need. Want to make it personal? Bring a copy of something you’d like to give new meaning — a rejection letter, a news article, you name it. Monroe County Senior Spelling Bee
Wednesday, April 22nd, 1pm-3pm — Community Room
Test your vocabulary and cheer on local word champions at the Hughes Library this April! Adults 55+ can compete for prizes—$100 for first place, $50 for runner-up. Audience members welcome for an afternoon of fun, laughs, and friendly competition. Library Board Game Night (for adults!)
Wednesday, April 22nd, 4:00pm – 8:00pm — Eisemann Room
Join us for a relaxed evening of tabletop fun! Meet new people, play your favorite games, or discover something new from our collection. Drop in anytime between 4–8 PM. Paper Tulips: Low Pressure Adult Craft
Monday, April 27th, 11:30AM — Eisemann Room
Join us for a relaxed craft session where we’ll make a small bouquet of paper tulips using kirigami, the Japanese art of paper cutting and folding. This tulip design falls somewhere in the middle of the difficulty range—so it’s not the simplest, but not the most complicated either. Be ready for plenty of folding as you bring your flowers to life! As with all of our Low-Pressure Adult Crafts, the focus is on fun, creativity, and connection rather than perfection—results may vary. If you’d like something to display or carry your tulips in, feel free to bring a small container such as a tiny vase, a glass yogurt jar, or similar. Tulip stems will be about 3–4 inches, so choose something small. Containers will not be provided; All supplies for paper tulip making will be provided. For adults only (ages 18+). Word Play Social: Scrabble, Bananagrams, Word Puzzles, & More!
Tuesday, April 28th, 1:30pm- 4:00pm (drop in) — Pullen Room
Unwind, stretch your brain, and enjoy a relaxed afternoon of word-friendly fun! Come solo, invite a friend, or meet someone new—everyone is welcome. Try our selection of Scrabble, Bananagrams, and other word-themed games, or bring your own favorites. And whether you prefer a quieter puzzle moment or simply don’t want to play a board game solo, we’ll have plenty of crosswords and word search print outs just in case. This is a self-guided, drop-in program—stay the whole time or stop by whenever you like. No registration required.

Discover the joy of Chair Zumba®, a seated adaptation of the popular Zumba® dance fitness program. Enjoy an upper body workout perfect for all fitness levels, plus it’s low impact! Drop-In Fly-Tying Demo & Practice with Trout Unlimited (Mondays)
Watch fly-tying demonstrations and try your hand at this traditional craft with John from Brodhead Chapter of Trout Unlimited! Drop by the Hughes Library lobby most Mondays, 1-4pm (see calendar for dates) to admire both classic and unique examples of fly tying patterns, learn techniques, and practice tying. All flies created will be donated to VALOR to support veterans with fly fishing. No experience or registration required.

Chair Yoga (Mondays)
Mondays: 4/13, 4/20, 4/27 (no class 4/6)

Join our Chair Yoga sessions for a yoga-focused class suitable for all levels. Yoga classes include breathing exercises, movement exercises, meditation, and more. All movements are adaptable—Luz provides instructions and modifications for different abilities, so you can participate entirely on the chair, partially off, or fully off the chair if comfortable. Please bring water, a towel (optional), and a yoga mat if you plan to move partially or fully off the chair. Bringing yoga blocks or straps, if you have them, is recommended. Space is limited to 50 participants, first-come, first-served. Arrive early—doors close promptly at 2:00 PM, and no late entries are allowed.

Color Yourself Calm: Adult Coloring (Wednesdays)
Every Wednesday, 12:30pm-3:00pm (drop-in) — Pullen Room
Join us for Color Yourself Calm, a relaxing, self-guided coloring session for adults of all abilities. All materials are provided—including colored pencils, crayons, markers, and a variety of coloring sheets—though you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer. Drop in anytime during the session and stay for as long as you like. Settle in for peaceful solitude or connect with others in a calm, creative atmosphere. Unwind, recharge, and enjoy a soothing break in your day!

Tech Thursday Series (Thursdays)
Every Thursday, 2:00pm – 3:00pm — Pullen Room
Tech Thursdays take place every Thursday at 2 PM in the Pullen Room, featuring a variety of tech and computer topics designed for beginners. Due to limited space, registration is required. Laptops will be available for classes that need them, but participants are welcome to bring their own devices for added comfort. If you find the classes don’t fully meet your needs, we’re happy to arrange one-on-one sessions based on librarian expertise. Chair Cardio/Movement (Fridays)

Fridays: 4/10 only (no class 4/3, 4/17, 4/24)
Every Friday, 2:00pm (unless otherwise specified) — Community Room
Join our Chair Cardio sessions for a heart-pumping, full-body movement class open to all levels. Each week features different exercises and movement styles—mixing it up between boxing, tai chi, balletone, strength/balance work and more. It will get your blood flowing and make you break a sweat, even from the chair! All movements are adaptable—Luz demonstrates modifications for different abilities, so you can participate fully on the chair, partially supported, or off the chair if comfortable. Bring water, a towel (optional), and a yoga mat if you plan to move partially or fully off the chair. Class is limited to 50 participants, first-come, first-served. Arrive early—doors close promptly at 2:00 PM, and no late entries are allowed.
